Hi Mark and Azi,

We received “A Dress for Mona” the other day, and I’ve just finished reading it.

To say I found it to be a very powerful and disturbing piece of work would be an understatement.

It just seems so surreal to me that someone so young would be asked to face that most horrendous of choices – and Azi, to think that you knew her!

It’s incomprehensible to me what you must have gone through in Iran when growing up and to see how you’ve been able to make such a successful life for yourself on two other continents is amazing and a testament to your strength (oh, and happy birthday, by the way!)

When I think about the “issues” I faced as a 16 year old, it puts them well and truly in perspective.

Anyway, we still hope to be able to catch up with you at some stage this year (fingers crossed)!

Darren

In 1985 I was invited to a Fireside where The Story of Mona was read and a short narrative provided. I was 14 at the time and will never forget the feelings I had that evening. I was raised a Presbyterian and never thought to question that until the evening in 1985. Mona's story moved me in a way I still do not understand. I "knew" her the moment I saw her photo. In March 2001 I declared as a Baha'i and while attending Feast that evening I heard a story from a wonderful young man who spoke of Mona and her mother! Coincidence? Nah. When i spoke to a childhood friend she informed me that after I had heard Mona's story in 1985 I was a different person in many ways and that she always knew I would one day find Baha'u'llah.

Mona still lives in my heart even though I never met her.

I never knew Mona. I became aware of her one day in the 1980's while waiting in a doctor's office. There was a magazine that had an article about these people called Bahá'ís in Irán. The mullas were killing them. I remember seeing a picture of Mona in the article. She was so vibrant, so beautiful in that picture, and about my age. I remember thinking in horror, "Who could kill her?"

Then I closed the magazine and forgot about her and these people called Bahá'ís.

About ten years later I was walking across the UC-Davis campus. There was a booth under a Live Oak Tree with a large poster that had "Bahá'í Faith - World Peace" written on it. At that time I was a long time agnostic and thought that organized religion was a sham, foolishness, and a source of violence and hatred. I avoided religious groups as if in fact they were the bubonic plague.

I would have walked past that booth except that I saw Mona's smiling face in my mind's eye. I had not thought of her since that day in the doctor's office. Her visage drew me as if in a dream to the booth. I met the Bahá'ís. I loved them. I was astounded at the teachings of Faith. Within a month I became a Bahá'í.

I cannot think about Mona without tears of joy and grief coming to my eyes. She is my saint because it was she who called me to the Faith. I can't imagine a life without the bounty of the Bahá'í Faith. It is as if I was seldom alive before I came to the Faith.

One glorious day I shall meet her. When I read, "I have sent death as a messanger of joy to thee, wherefore dost thou greive?", I know in my heart of hearts that it must be true.

Thank you for the play. I long to see it.

Warm regards,

David Austin Taos, NM

This is a wonderful website and SUCH a choice of topic! I am a Baha'i in New Zealand and remember when the news came of Mona and the other martyred women - shock that such cruelty could continue in Iran was my first reaction - then great love and pride for the dedication and service given to the world by these women. Mona's story told in music by Doug Cameron then enforced that love. Mona gave all she had in the service of her Beloved. And now God ensures she will never be forgotten and will inspire other souls to create like you have, or to hear God's message to mankind. All of this is so wonderful! Thank you dear friends...Marlene Harrison

Allah'u'abha! I'm a Baha'i youth from Canada...

I thouroughly enjoyed browsing your site and reading about Mona's life!! There were things in her biography that I had never read before!! She is one of my personal heroes...

By the way, my mom is in one of the pictures in the "Mona and her Family" section. My dad was a youth assistant for Mr. Mahmudnizhad, and could name off almost everyone in the pics! In fact, there were several people in the class pictures that were either martyred themselves, or had family members marytred.

Browsing those photos and reading the stories reminds me that all of this happened in the not-so-distant past... these people are still very tangible for our imaginations and hearts.

God bless!

I used the Mona-video in teching a high-school class in Koppang, Norway. The Norwegians don't easily show feelings, but I think the students were moved. 10 years later the school asked again for teaching, alas there was only 2 days notice and I could not get the video, and this 2 lessons were not so touching without video. Next time Mona will come with to the school! Bjorg Tronnes, Norway

Hi.

I am a Baha'i youth from New Zealand, and although I was brought up a Baha'i I only declared this year at the age of 18. Although I was aware of mona's story while I was a child, I never really knew anything about her until this year when I saw Doug Cameron's amazing video. I felt so incredibly affected by this amazing young woman that I couldn't sleep that night, and the next day I found this site. I spent about 5 hours reading everything that I could find on this site about Mona, and I still find it hard to believe how much I feel connected to her. I was born almost a year after she was martyred on the other side of the world and yet she feels so close. I am hoping to learn to speak persian next year, and one of my aims is to travel to Iran in the next few years.

Feel free to contact me. quila426@student.otago.ac.nz

deepest love,

Laura Quin

Allah'u'Abha, My name is Sameem Monzviyan, I was born in Yemen and my mother Elham Mowlavi was born in Aden of Yemen too, she always told me about the times she used to play with Mona Mahmudnizhad and how beautiful and loving she was. Since I was a kid I was so proud that my own mother was in contact with such a pure spirit. My mother passed away in Yemen and I moved with my family to Australia to finish my education and return to pioneer in Yemen, after all, it's my mother's home and Mona's home too. This is a great website and a beautiful gift for the Baha'i community in large. Thank you for sharing Mona's life with us, may god bless her soul more and more.

We used to have the video "Mona" which was produced perhaps 10 or so years ago in our LSA Library. It has however seemed to have disappeared and nobody knows what happened to it. I wonder if this tape is still available for purchase? if not, the NSA of Canada should consider a re-release of it.

Or a copy(copies)made from someone who has it, (IF THIS IS LEGAL? or if permission can be obtained?)

Many others perhaps don't know it existed and will also want their own copy of it!

Allah-O-Abha My name is Mitra Kholousi. We used to live in Yemen, the country where Mona was born. We grew up together and got to be best friends. Even after they left for Iran, we never lost touch. After maybe 15 years fate took us to live in Shiraz. After I got engaged, my dad asked Mona if she would like to work in my place in our little super market. She only worked for one week, then she said," I can't bear working here anymore. I am constantly thinking, what if they(meaning the government guards) come to arrest my dad, and I am not there. I am all so ready. I have rememorized the big obligatory prayer to read it in prison." She quit working and a few months after she was arrested. I have another story from Mona which has touched me a lot. Mona had her own little room in Shiraz. She had decorated everything herself. One day she took me to her room to show me her decoration, when I noticed that she had a couple little cushions on her bed. They were imbroidered like little faces. Big happy eyes, a nose, but no mouth!! I laughed and told her," you forgot to finish this". She said,"No, it's finished. I intentionally didn't put a mouth for her so she wouldn't gossip!"

Reading the plot of that story reminds me of the martyrdom of St. Maximillian Kolbe: When he was young he had a dream of the Virgin Mary offering him the choice of two crowns:one red & one white. The red one symolized martyrdom; & the white one symbolized purity. I can't remember if he chose both, or, at least the red one, but, many, many years later, he was taken to Aushwitz, where he volunteered to die in the place of another man. St. Maximillian Kolbe was canonized in 1980. The man whose place he took was present in the crowd.

I first discovered Mona's Story in 1985 when I heard the song "Mona with The Children" by Doug Cameron. I am a Christian but I feel Mona's strength and conviction transcended all organized religion and really spoke to the whole world. Her story is especially pertinent given the religious persecution and conflict that exists in the world today. When I need to put things into perspective and get back in touch with my funadmental values I visit Mona through the Music of Mr. Cameron. Almost 20 years after I first discovered her, I am still deeply moved by and draw great strength from this young woman who I have never met. Thank you to Mona's family for bringing a person into our world who's life has gone on as an example to so many others. She is my personal heroine. John Crant, Ottawa, Canada.

I had never heard about Mona until just yesterday (I'm 21 years old; she was killed about three months after I was born). I saw the Doug Cameron video "Mona With The Children" here in Canada on MuchMoreMusic. I thought it was such a beautiful and touching video, and after watching it,I decided to find out more details about this young girl, which is how I discovered this website. I think it is absolutely tragic what happened to Mona and the other women, but I also think that Mona was a very special human being. The fact that, at such a young age, she was willing to have her life taken rather than deny her faith and who she was, is incredible and inspiring. I am sure her memory will live on forever. Emily

I hope one day I can learn to be even half as pure, devout and sincere. I keep a small framed photo of Mona on my desk as a beautiful reminder - for what she and so many others sacrificed so that the Baha'i Faith could grow, so that people like us could learn about it, and be drawn to it through their living and sacrificial testimony to its beauty and power. Her strength of spirit is inspirational for everyone of all faiths.

Allah-u-Abha! My name's Sharjil Neshat, 24 (turning 25 soon), from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Finally there's a Baha'i site that is specially devoted and dedicated to Mona Mahmudnizhad. I've been a Baha'i for 5 years now. If it wasn't for Mona, I would've committed suicide 5 years ago and deprived myself enjoying this very precious life. Today I'm reborn, alive and laughing thanks to Mona. Also, because of Mona I'm a follower of Baha'u'llah, the Blessed Beauty. I owe my life to this Angel of Shiraz. Mona Mahmudnizhad, I love you and I'll never forget you for saving my life. May God's Glory be upon you and your precious sacrifice! Cheers! Sharjil Neshat

Here's some great news !! As you may have heard - Jack Lenz had done some of the music for the Passion of the Christ (the research alone took him 15 mths to do!) and he told us all at the SED conference, that a few months ago he met again with Mel Gibson and another producer from the movie in a hotel in L.A. and they were so appreciative of what he had done for their movie that they asked him what they could do for him. Jack is sooooo sweet and the most humble person I know and his eyes sparkle and are always full of gentle happiness. He told them that he had always wanted to see a movie made about the 10 Iranian Baha'i women who had been martyred in the 80's (you know the ones that were martyred along with Mona who was only 15 yrs old and asked to be the last one hung so she could pray for the other woman to stay strong and face their deaths without fear or recanting their Faith- and Doug Cameron years ago had made that video and song "Mona with the Children"). He gave them a letter that Mona had written to read and when the producer looked up he was crying. So then they said to Jack "What do you need?" And Jack said laughingly "Oh, about $10 million Dollars!" and they said "Done!" So Jack has just finished the script and will be sending it to them by the end of this month! When he told everyone this story at the conference, all the Iranians started crying. I think it was more out of profound gratitude that these courageous souls will not be forgotten and that their story might become immortalized in film. Jack gave them some Baha'i books to read. We'll see what happens as I understand Mr. Gibson is a very devout Catholic.

I lived in Shiraz close to Mona's parents' neat small apartment. I was a member of the teaching comittee at the beginning of the revolution. Mona taught one of the children classes in our area, and I would meet her and other members of our comittee, sometimes in her home, to see how things are going. I always thought highly of Mona and her family, but I had no idea such a beutiful young lady with her angelic voice would rise up to be among martyrs of Baha whose name would echo in the hearts and minds of millions around the globe as long as God's kingdom would last. The pictures of her, that I have seen so far, are not doing her a justice. She was more beautiful than I can describe. I am honored to have the chance to meet her. I wish I had the vision to have known her for who she was going to be, maybe I could have learned from her and get strengths from her spiritual power. I am so sorry for being blinded to see her light. I bow in respect and awe for the sacrifice she and others made, and hope the world would understand the majesty and power of their commitmmet to the faith of Baha'u'llah, and draw strength and hope from them, and get to know Baha'u'llah through them, and others who serve the faith selflessly. May their spirit never cease to shed light on our lives regardless of our shortcomings.

Dear Friends: I'm sure that by now you have all heard this great news: Here's some great news !! Well I just recieved some additonal news about the movie that basically confirms that the news is true. It just such wonderful news that I had to share with you all. Here it is: Hi! My name is Samim and I'm from Isfahan - Iran. I red the very exciting news about Mona's film and I asked my mother, who is writing Mona's biography (its 300 page now), to see if she had heard about this news. She asked Mona's mother, Mrs. Mahmudnizhad, and she confirmed that the news is accurate - in fact, Mel Gibson will have a discussion over the phone with Mona's mother on Thursday. Thought I'd share this message with everyone. Thanks Samim Love Always, Your Baha'i Sister Lara xoxo

Mona Mahmudnizhad had an amazing life. She is my guiding star in the sky. She is the answer to life's most difficult question. She died with courage. She died with faith. She died so sadly. Yet still Islam prevails. I think radical Islam needs to really look at what they're doing. So we all can live in peace. http://profiles.yahoo.com/ashes_to_love

Hello, my name is Rohit. I live in United States. I'm doing research on the mistreatment of the bahais. Your website has helped me a lot. I, myself, used to go to a bahai school before I moved to here. My friend used to tell me about what happened to his family in Iran. I am very sorry. I showed this to my friends and they were very touched. We are doing our best to try to get this to the attention of others. Than kyou!

I was very moved by this website and Mona's story. My Father, Cyrus Agahi, Translated and Published Shirin Dalvand's degree thesus into English and it was Published in The Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence in Geneva. This is the first article by an Iranian student which has been published in an International Journal. If you type in to the Internet the name Shirin Dalvand you may well see this article, and now many other people have followed her work. As you may well know, Shirin Delvand was one out of the ten martyrs executed along side Mona.

I have been browsing through information on Mona for the past week or so, and I stumbled upon this sight. This is FACINATING! Mona is truly an inspiration for Baha'i youth, such as myself, all across the globe. Recently, I heard that Jack Lenz is making a movie out of this story. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this production! If you do, please email me at birdaloo@hotmail.com One can only hope that Jack Lenz portrays Mona as the true light that she really was.

Does anyone reading this know how to get in contact with Mitra Kholousi? She has a has an entry on this page from 2003. I think she now lives in Iran - she and I attended high school together in California in the early 1980's. Mitra was on a student exchange program at that time. How do I get in contact with Mitra? I would really like to talk to her after all these years. Signed, Chuck Petersen
